Artist Statement
My work uncovers the hidden world that lives beneath us carefully mapping and shaping our world. I expose the intersection of these organic structures and our digital world revealing the shared relationship of networks. I explore this through sculpture showcasing a physical aspect of how I see these relationships form, experimenting with materials like plaster, clay organic material and unused digital items.
There’s a level of unpredictability and uncertainty when it comes to the outcome of my work. Through clay and plaster there’s this interesting process through casting material and transforming them. I enjoy this as it links to the organic nature of mycelium and fungi, its ability to change and adapt, constantly shape-shifting. Using hand-built structures glazes and oxides I imitate natures textures and the organic forms that flow from fungi. In a time where the world is mediated by data and technology, I seek to remind my audience of the organic system and its influence in our world today. I wanted to spark thoughts of how much trust we put in the things we don’t see and what we do see.
My work makes others think deeply about invisible connections, As a christian I share a relationship with God, I may not see him physically but I see him through his works and so I aim to challenge those who may think otherwise and help them to see him through a way that they might understand.
